Downs Polo Tournament
Downs Polo Tournament - 3rd & 4th July 2010. After 12mls of rains on Friday night the Downs Polo club staged their annual tournament over the weekend. The decision to go ahead with after the rain turned out to be a good one with fine weather and polo players keen to get a weekend of polo played. The C. Grade final on Sunday morning saw the Downs No.3 side of Peter Grimes, Andy Gilmore, Corie Milne and Kate Grimmond win their part of the Round Robin and take out the Des Bosworth trophy. The B. Grade final was a much closer affair between Downs 4 and F.H Polo. The scores were locked together at 3 all with not a lot of time left in the forth chukka when Bingham Fitzhenry slotted the winning goal to win 4-3. Bingham also collected the Novice pony award and the B.Grade pony prize. The A.Grade final was contested by Downs No.1 and Downs No.2 after both the teams had close wins on the Saturday. In a final where very few goals were scored with only seconds left on the clock Will Gilmore hit the winning goal for Downs 1 to win 4-3. The Downs No.1 side of Max O'Leary, Angus Gilmore, Will Gilmore and Peter Grimes could be well proud of their efforts. Gus picked up the A.Grade pony award and the most valuable player of the tournament. Will Gilmore recieved the A.Greade team of ponies prize. For the losing side of Brett Telford, Gary Gilmore, Dicko Marchant and Gerard O'Leary they certainly tried their hardest and with a bit more luck could have easily been a different result. Jason Denny in his first year of polo won the Rookie of the tournament award donated by Mrs Rene O'Leary. Another very successful Carnival for the Downs Club largely due to the good work of Nelly Hood and her hard working helpers of Kate, Terry and Barry.

Mercedes-Benz 2008
The Mercedes–Benz of Brisbane polo tournament is fast becoming Queenslands biggest polo social event. This year the event was held on 14 September 2008 and attracted approx 3000 spectators. This is the Mercedes-Benz third year as the major sponsor and is full of high fashion, champagne, fine food, socialites, great polo and best of all charitable donations to the Aussie Kidz Charity. The tournament was held at Neill and Trisha Fords Alsace Polo estate at Veresdale Scrub just north of Beaudesert. The estate certainly stands out with its unique polo barns and deck area providing a great viewing area for guests and a great backdrop for the polo.

Quuensland Gold Cup 2008
Played on 30 and 31 August 2008, the tournament includes the Gold Cup (10 goal), Silver Cup (4 goal) and Bronze Cup (2 goal). The grade of the team is calculated by adding up the grade (goal rating) of each player and the team is given that goal rating. The Gold and Silver cups were first played for in 1926 and as the winner’s plinth under the cup is filled with the winner’s names a new plinth is added. I would think it makes it one of the tallest cups in Australia. The Bronze Cup was introduced in 1986. The Gold Cup had four teams, silver cup five teams and bronze cup four teams. Players came from as far as New Zealand and South Australia to play in the competition. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect at the beautiful Elysian Fields Estate on the Gold Coast hinterland.
